Acrobat AcroForms or LiveCycle Designer XML Forms, and Can I Use Both? (1 hour)

PDF form creators have two Adobe tools to choose from: Acrobat, which creates interactive forms with fixed page layouts, and LiveCycle Designer, which creates dynamic forms with varying page layouts and field sizes. In this session, you will learn whether Acrobat or Designer is right for you, and the upsides and pitfalls for choosing one or the other.

Using LiveCycle Forms to Automate Enrollment in the VA Health Care System (1 hour)

In this case study you will see how thousands of veterans quickly, easily and securely apply for health care and compensation, pension, and rehabilitation benefits at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Anyone hoping to use Designer PDF forms to securely and automatically process and auto populate customer or patient data will benefit from this presentation.
To apply for health care, veterans fill out and submit a LiveCycle Designer form. The form and its XML data is automatically routed to the VA health care facility selected by the veteran. VA employees register the data, print the form and mail it back to the veteran for signature. Or veterans also can choose to print out the completed form and mail it to a VA health care facility instead.
This presentation will go inside the Designer-based 10-10 EZ form to describe the technology and lessons learned. You also will see a live demonstration of the form in action. The acquisition, transmission, storing, and processing of the veteran’s personal data in accordance with privacy laws, including HIPAA, will be discussed.

For forms designers creating Acrobat PDF forms, this session covers some of the basics of forms design and creating interactive forms that can be filled in and completed by users of the Adobe Reader software. How to design a form, populate the form with fields in Acrobat, add some simple interactive features using JavaScripts and aggregating form data are all covered in this two hour session.
Converting Acrobat Forms to Designer Forms (2 hours)

This workshop is based on Carl’s recent consulting work for a federal agency that is considering moving static PDF forms to dynamic ones created with Designer.

Many common (and some not so common) tasks in Acrobat are done on a repetitive basis, in a manner that is neither time nor cost efficient. Digging through multi-level Menus each time a task is performed is one example. Fortunately, Acrobat provides two mechanisms for automating tasks- JavaScript, for grouping multiple actions into a single step, and Batch Processing, for operating on multiple documents. Using these two features can massively improve workflow efficiency and reduce training time. This session will cover the details of using JavaScript for Acrobat automation and creating Batch Sequences. Practical working examples will be shown..
